Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was chosen to be the 2016 Olympic Host City
on Friday, Oct. 2nd, 2009 by The International Olympic Committee
at the Bella Conference Center in Copenhagen, Denmark

The IOC members voted by secret ballot until one city received a majority; the city receiving the fewest votes was eliminated after each round.

The IOC has 106 members. The president, Jacques Rogge, doesn't vote. Members from a country with a bid city in the race were ineligible to vote as long as their candidate is still in contention. That means that 94 members were eligible to vote in the first round, 98 members in the second round and 98 members in the third and final round.

• Supporting athletes hoping to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics

Thousands of persons in the world are obscurely training around us to excel in their particular sport to the best of their ability. Should their best be good enough, they may represent their country in the greatest sporting event our world has to offer - The Olympics.

Some athletes prepare with the finest equipment and trainers the world has to offer and others train alone and without equipment. Many athletes have sponsors; some have sponsors seeking them out, however most will never have a sponsor. None of these athletes will attain Olympian status without striving to do their best and all deserve our support, whether morally or financially.

2016rio.org will provide an international meeting point for athletes who have a dream to represent their country in the Rio 2016 Games. Over the next years we will build a database of links to the blogs and web sites of new, prospective and accomplished athletes sorted by their countries and disciplines. We will also provide web pages for those who do not have their own blog or web site.

Supporting the athletes of your home country is a great way to support the Olympic Movement.

• Promoting Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and its People

The cost of hosting the Olympics is enormous and rising each year. The Olympics must be the pride of the city and country without leaving a long lasting financial burden for its people. Hosting the Olympics should create a lasting legacy and a good profit. The responsibility of hosting successful 2016 Games rests on the local, state and national governments, private businesses, organizations and all individuals.

The government is responsible for the planning of Olympic-sized facilities and the building of an ultra-modern infrastructure. It is critical to build facilities which will enhance the city of Rio and are useful to the public long after the Olympics have left the city. Contracts must be awarded, without corruption, to businesses providing resourceful yet high-quality services and products. Employing local businesses and laborers brings local hands and pride into the project and keeps the earnings in Rio.

Many private, local businesses will profit indirectly from the 2016 Rio Olympics and the estimated 2 million visitors are only the start. The eyes and ears of billions of people will be on Rio de Janeiro, its people and its natural beauty. The impression that Rio makes to the world will attract visitors and business, years into the future. Local businesses have the responsibility of helping the City of Rio and themselves by supporting and promoting the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The success 2016 Rio Olympics ultimately rests on the shoulders of all citizens. Rio de Janeiro is now in the international spotlight and ‘Rio news’ has become international news. Rio will be judged on it own actions, from today until 2016, and all news, good and bad, will impact the Rio Olympics and the future of Rio.

The Rio Olympic Games could easily be judged as ‘successful’ before they start if the government and people of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil endeavor to make it ‘successful’ from the start. The spirit of the world is lit by the spirit of the host.

2016rio.org is building an extensive open database for Rio to endorse itself. We will provide links to the web site of individuals and businesses wishing to promote themselves before, during and after the 2016 Olympics. The IOC report noted that a shortage of hotel rooms is one of Rio’s major challenges to hosting the 2016 games. Our database will be open to hotels, guest houses and private citizens wishing to rent their apartments. We will also provide a customized web page for those without a web site.

• Building international friendships through language

Brazil has a very rich and lavish culture, attracting worldwide interest. Learning about the culture and life-style of Brazil is as fulfilling as learning the language. We hope to build relationships with our foreign guests long before the games begin.

2016rio.org will provide an online language school for persons wishing to learn Brazilian Portuguese or English. We will also provide online schooling from other languages to Brazilian Portuguese. Language courses will be enforced by facilitating interaction between Brazilians and the citizens of other countries. This will be attained through open, online forums and a key-pal or pen-pal program, encouraging persons to write each other as a way to learn more about Brazil, the life-styles and the language.

As we get closer to the Olympics, we will provide an area for Brazilians, with foreign language experience, wishing to become a RioGuia or Rio guide for some of the estimated two million expected guests in 2016.
